VocaBoca / 波卡 ("VocaBoca," "we," "our," or "us") is a language learning app that helps you create personalized vocabulary cards. We designed VocaBoca to be lightweight and local-first, with no account required.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the app may process, how it is used, and the choices you have.
Information We Store on Your Device
VocaBoca stores your learning data locally on your device, including:
- Your decks and deck names
- Selected learning language, level, topic, and daily word count
- Generated vocabulary cards, translations, example sentences, pronunciation guides, and review status
- Saved words and words marked for practice again
- App settings, such as pronunciation display, reminder preference, voice preference, and widget style
- Cached illustrations and audio files used by the app
This information is used to run the app, show your progress, power widgets, and preserve your learning history.
VocaBoca does not require you to create an account. If you delete the app, your locally stored decks and progress may be deleted from your device.
Information Sent to AI and Content Services
Some VocaBoca features use third-party services to generate or fetch content.
AI vocabulary generation
When you create or update vocabulary cards, VocaBoca may send your selected language, level, learning goal, existing generated words, and related prompt information to an AI provider, such as OpenRouter, to generate cards, deck names, and practice content.
Illustrations
VocaBoca may send vocabulary words or illustration search terms to The Noun Project to fetch matching visual assets.
Pronunciation audio
If you use Fish Audio pronunciation, VocaBoca may send the word or sentence you request to Fish Audio to generate audio. If you use Apple Voice, speech may be generated using Apple's built-in system voice features instead.
We do not intentionally send your name, email address, contact list, photos, precise location, or payment information to these services because VocaBoca does not require those items to use the app.
Notifications
If you enable reminders, VocaBoca schedules local notifications on your device. These notifications may include words from your decks so you can review them later.
You can turn notifications off in the app settings or in iOS Settings at any time.
Widgets
VocaBoca Home Screen widgets use a shared app group on your device to display your selected deck, current word, pronunciation, translation, progress, and widget style. This data is shared locally between the main app and the widget extension so the widget can work.
Analytics
At launch, VocaBoca does not require an account and does not need personal analytics to function.
If we add analytics in the future, we will update this Privacy Policy to explain what is collected, why it is collected, and what choices you have.
Purchases
VocaBoca is currently planned as a free app. If paid features, subscriptions, or in-app purchases are added later, payment processing will be handled by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive your full payment card details from Apple.
Children's Privacy
VocaBoca is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
Data Retention
Local learning data remains on your device until you delete it in the app or delete the app. Some cached files may remain until the app clears them or the app is deleted.
Third-party AI, audio, and illustration providers may process requests according to their own privacy policies and retention practices.
Your Choices
You can:
- Delete decks or app data from within VocaBoca
- Delete the app to remove local app data from your device
- Turn notifications on or off in iOS Settings
- Choose between available pronunciation options
- Contact us with privacy questions
Third-Party Services
VocaBoca may use:
- OpenRouter for AI text generation
- The Noun Project for illustrations
- Fish Audio for generated pronunciation audio
- Apple system services for notifications, widgets, local speech, and App Store payments if paid features are added
These services may process technical information such as request content, IP address, device/network metadata, and service logs according to their own policies.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the app and its data. However, no system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as VocaBoca changes. If we make material changes, we will update the effective date and, where appropriate, notify users in the app or on our website.
